Industrial Wireless for the Electric Power Industry

Power Generation Datasheet
The power industry must safely and cost-effectively generate electricity under ever increasing constraints. Even at the most sophisticated and efficient plants, equipment fails, skilled engineers are retiring, people make mistakes, and operating costs fluctuate. Apprion's Power Industry Wireless Experts would like to help you address six key questions that will improve your plant operations and provide significant cost savings.

6 Key Questions For Every Power Plant Manager
Now more than ever, efficient operations are critical to compete in the electricity marketplace. Here are six key questions that all power plant managers should address.
  1. Repairing or replacing expensive, obsolete equipment?
Obsolescence is a very difficult issue to tackle. If your plant will incur substantial costs or downtime due to a system failure, you should look into wireless immediately. Open wireless networks have been proven to address three key issues in regards to obsolete systems: cost, extensibility and quick replacement.
  2. Automating condition monitoring?
Manual condition monitoring is a very time consuming process that involves many man hours and only offers snapshots of data for a point in time. Wireless condition monitoring is now available and has been installed in a number of facilities that provide real-time, continuous data to the control room without the need for manual data collection. Automating data collection wirelessly provides better cumulative data to make decisions with confidence which in turn frees personnel time to concentrate on other tasks.
  3. How do we perform routine outage piping integrity inspections easily?
Outages are the largest expenditure of an O&M budget. There is significant savings offered by performing tests and inspections wirelessly. Through wireless non-destructive testing, there is no need to remove insulation and add scaffolding to access test areas, which means less equipment downtime and significant cost savings.
  4. Can we monitor more equipment remotely from the control room with a shrinking budget?
With the reduction of staffing across the power industry, remote plant equipment cannot be monitored as often as needed to prevent failure or an environmental impact through a spill or a forced outage. With wireless, a plant can quickly replace an older piece of equipment and have a method to implement any new inputs or outputs or alarming functionality available on most new plant equipment. A wireless network provides a way to get the plant running again immediately, with more information at the plant operators fingertips.
  5. Are we currently in compliance with all regulatory requirements?
Oftentimes compliance with regulatory standards has no tangible payback and is therefore hard to justify. An open, reliable wireless application infrastructure with facility wide coverage offers another tool to achieve regulatory compliance quicker, easier, and with less expense in capital investment. For example, you could meet the NERC "two forms of identification for entry into a control room" requirement with a wireless video application coupled with wireless badge access. This wireless solution is much easier to install and significantly less expensive than its wired alternative.
  6. How do we stretch every O & M dollar for control and instrumentation by 60%?
When compared with hardwired applications providing the same functionality, wireless has been shown through prior installations and case studies to be 40-60% less expensive than hardwired and with more benefits to be realized and leveraged. Plus, wireless provides a significantly quicker ROI compared to wired solutions.
